Japan Baseball Postpones Opening Day

Opening Day for Japanese professional baseball or 野球, one of the most popular sports in Japan, has been pushed back at least a week because of the recent disaster that destroyed much of the region.

The league, which traditionally includes some former American players and coaches, had been scheduled to open the season Friday before the earthquake and tsunami struck the region and forced the postponement of many of Japan’s sporting events.

The Central League accommodated a government request to push back the start of the season until March 29, according to league directors.

The Pacific League has already pushed back the start of its season until the second week of April.

The leagues will also move many of their night games to daylight hours in hopes of preserving electricity in the region.

While the disaster in Japan won't have major effects on the American sporting world, it could have an effect  on the larger stage. Japan has won the past two World Baseball Classics, defeating Cuba in the finals of the 2009 tournament and South Korea in the 2009 finale.
