Jayson Werth was a struggling major-league player trying to latch on with a team when he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in December 2006 as a backup outfielder.
Werth had missed the entire previous season with a wrist injury but showed glimpses of brilliance in 2007, collecting hits in nine straight plate appearances late in the year.
