The last time that Red Sox fans saw Clay Buchholz pitch this season was way back on June 16. For the past six weeks, the team and their fans have been waiting patiently to get good news about Buchholz’s return. Finally, on August 2, after multiple trips to doctors and other specialists, Buchholz has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of the L2 vertebrae in his back. The question now is: Will Buchholz return this season?
Red Sox medical director, Dr. Tom Gill, believes that there is a reasonable chance that Buchholz will return at some point this season. Buchholz does not require surgery and the hope is that his stress fracture will heal with the proper regimen of rehabilitation exercises. There is no direct timetable for his recovery. It will be a process of “seeing how he feels.” This could take a week or a month depending on Buchholz.
