After months of speculation the Philadelphia Flyers have finally confirmed their participation in the 2012 Bridgestone Winter Classic.
While no official announcement has been made the following was sent to Flyers season ticket holders this week:
“The Flyers will host the 2012 Bridgestone Winter Classic. You will notice that only 43 games are included in your ticket and parking book(s). Winter Classic tickets are not a part of your 2011-12 season ticket package. However, all full season ticket holders will have the ability to purchase up to the same number of Winter Classic Packages as 2011-12 full season seats you own.”
So, what’s the hold up with an official announcement?
One reason could be a scheduling conflict in the Philadelphia sports complex. The Winter Classic will likely be played at night due to the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Washington Redskins at 1PM across the street at Lincoln Financial Field. For those who don’t know, the Wells Fargo Center home to the Flyers and Sixers, Citizens Bank Park home to the Phillies, and Lincoln Financial Field home to the Eagles are all located in the same complex. They wouldn’t want to run both events at the same time, and the parking situation wouldn’t allow it.
