Last night, the NFL rolled out the first episode of a new series called, A Football Life, focusing on New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Memo to the NFL Network, we need more programming like this. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick agreed to being miked up for an entire season, on and off the season and while I am not a Patriots fan, I have to say that I seriously enjoyed the premiere last night.

Usually while speaking to the media, Belichick operates more like the Deputy Director of the CIA than a head coach in the NFL. This show opens up a never before seen look at one of the most perplexing and winning active coaches in the NFL today. I came away from watching this show last night learning a few things about the veiled head coach.

Despite his massive success on the playing field as the head coach of the Patriots, he seems to be a very ordinary guy off the field. The show opens with Belichick on his boat. His boat is a 22 foot, single engine walk-through Grady White. While he is filmed fishing, he is using a Penn 704Z spinning reel, one of the oldest fishing reels that the Penn fishing company has made. As someone who fished for a living for over 20 years, that tells me, he likes the utilitarian things that work, the 704 was one of the best fishing reels ever made. The documentary shows him driving to work, he’s driving a Chevy Impala.
