For all the hell Smith’s taken over the years from Bay Area fans, he’s earned his respect, and it’s time to throw out the idea that opposing teams can put the game on Smith’s shoulders, and figuring he will chock at some point in the game.
The last time these teams met Frank Gore was playing through an injury and failed to gain one yard on the ground on six carries. Kendall Hunter was used in the second half, and had success on the ground, but the story of that game was the play of Smith as the 49ers came out throwing, against a Giants defense that was selling out to stuff the run.
Expect the Giants to put the game on Smith’s shoulders once again, and it will be interesting to watch if he can have another quality performance with a Super Bowl birth on the line.
