The Detroit Lions were one of the remarkable turnaround stories in the NFL this season, but perhaps their fans are going to have to find new ways to deal with their favorite team’s success. One Detroit Lions fan, heading to Federal court on Monday, is facing charges of threatening to blow up the Louisiana Superdome during the Lions playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.
According to Nola.com, Michigan resident Shawn Payton, no relation to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Peyton, phoned in a bomb threat when the two teams squared off in the wildcard round of the playoffs. Once the Saints increased their lead to 24-14 over the Lions, Payton called the Superdome and left the message, “I will blow up your building.” As the game progressed, Payton made another call as the Saints were pulling away with a victory. “Hi, I want you to relay a message to the sideline. If your stupid Southern team keeps winning, there will be reper….severe consequences. OK?”
