San Diego Chargers not expected to be major players in free agency

The NFL free agency period opens this afternoon at 4pm EST, but don’t expect the San Diego Chargers to be major players, chasing big name stars which become available today. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers are more likely to try to lock up some of their own players and perhaps sign some of the second or third tier free agents which will become available.

San Diego’s roster could be altered significantly in this season’s free agency with the team possibly losing WR Vincent Jackson and RB Mike Tolbert among others. The paper reports that the Chargers are currently $14.9 million dollars under the salary cap but the team expects to clear even more cap room with the expected release of OL Marcus McNeill later in the week.
