The Los Angeles Angels appear ready to trade unhappy outfielder Bobby Abreu to the Cleveland Indians, according to multiple sources. Abreu is not thrilled with the fact that he is not guaranteed a starting job in the Angels outfield this season, and has asked to be traded.
The Angels would most likely have to pay the majority of Abreu’s $9 million salary for the upcoming season, although it is unknown just exactly how much it will take to complete any deal.
The Indians have been decimated by injuries in their outfield, most notably to Grady Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo. Michael Brantley appears entrenched in center field, so Abreu could have to temporarily platoon with Shelley Duncan in left field. Whereas he became upset in Los Angeles without a starting gig, it remains to be seen whether he would be any happier in Cleveland. At least with the Angels, he would be part of what is expected to be a playoff contender. The Indians do not seem to have as much of a chance at competing for the postseason, even with the addition of two new wild card berths.
