The San Francisco 49ers recently inked former New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs to a one-year $2 million dollar deal. Will he now become the goal line back for the 49ers in 2012 instead of RB Frank Gore? Jacobs seems to be thinking that way. Jacobs has spent the majority of his career in a two-back system while in New York and now finds himself behind Frank Gore on the Niners depth chart.
Jacobs told reporters on a conference call that he hopes to become the 49ers running back which gets the call to carry the ball at the goal line. When asked, Jacobs told reporters, “Well, being 25 or 35 pounds heavier than Frank, I’d hope to be the one to get it.” He quickly added, “But Frank has done great in that area the last seven years. We came into the league the same year. He’s done great. He has no issues getting in. It’s whatever is best for the team,” Jacobs concluded.
