This past offseason, free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt was in high demand. Not only was he one of the more reliable and consistent free agents on the market, he was one of the few who could have an impact on a playoff team’s rotation immediately. He appeared destined to make his decision as to which team he would be bringing his talents to in 2012.
Then, he appeared destined somewhere else. And then a few days later, it was reported that he was heading somewhere else. Then a new team emerged as the favorites to sign Oswalt the following week. He was going to the Boston Red Sox. And then the St. Louis Cardinals. But then the Texas Rangers jumped into the mix.
But we were also told that the Philadelphia Phillies could not be counted out. We also heard that the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees were being mentioned as possible suitors. But what started out as excitement quickly turned to an annoyance.
