After being a head coach in Miami, Detroit and Los Angeles with the Clippers, Gentry was brought in as an assistant coach under then Suns head coach Mike D'Antoni. As one of D'Antoni's leading assistants, Gentry was part of the greatest era in Suns history as the organization made back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances and was seemingly a title contender every year under D'Antoni.
