With the lack of emergence of any quarterback worthy of the top spot in the 2013 NFL Draft, speculation will run rampant until April 25. That same lack of emergence has led to many falling into the over-hype machine. Mike Glennon is the latest as national media has fueled the hype train for the N.C. State senior signal caller.
Maybe I’m the conductor of the train or just overzealous but I’m hip to Mike Glennon’s game. The first time I evaluated Glennon was late in 2011 against Clemson. Glennon started out sporadic to say the least. Clemson was pressuring him and he was forcing the ball into spots he shouldn’t have. His accuracy was terrible and his footwork even worse. Then the second quarter came and Glennon looked like a different QB. He settled in and started throwing darts to lead N.C. State to an upset over the ACC powerhouse.
After starting 2012 off on a bad foot in a four interception performance against Tennessee it was easy to write him off as a guy with enormous physical talent but zero “it” factor or presence. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Glennon has excelled after his poor performance against Tennessee. He’s done so with no weapons and even less defense to keep the Wolfpack in games.
Glennon is far from a perfect prospect and I’m not advocating for him to be the top pick in April’s draft but he’s more than an over-hyped QB in an average class of QB’s. Glennon struggles with his pocket presence. At 6’6″, 232 pounds he doesn’t move well and is forced to take a lot of sacks due to his lack of mobility. Glennon will have to master an NFL offense or teams will overload blitz him knowing he can’t escape the pocket. Mastering an NFL offense shouldn’t be hard for Glennon as he’s spent four years in a pro-style offense at N.C. State.
Instead of talking about all the things that will make Glennon a viable first round option, we show you in this film study of the N.C. State signal caller.
