According to multiple sources, the Boston Red Sox have signed shortstop Stephen Drew to a one year contract worth roughly $9.5 million, with another $500K in performance based bonuses in the deal. Drew could be the shortstop the Red Sox have been seeking for years, although it may be for just one season.
The Red Sox have been looking for a replacement for the likes of Nomar Garciaparra and then Orlando Cabrera for quite some time. They have gone through and exhausted many options over the past seven or eight years, and are still grooming a couple of possibilities in the minor leagues. Jose Iglesias needs to work on his hitting, while Pedro Ciriaco appears to be a player who may be destined for the utility role in Boston, although he certainly proved that he could come up with some big hits last season.
