The Seattle Seahawks will now be able to head into the playoffs with the services of CB Richard Sherman. Sherman was facing a league imposed four-game suspension after allegedly testing positive for a banned substance during a drug test. Throughout the entire process, Sherman maintained his innocence and he was vindicated on Thursday after the league dropped it’s suspension after hearing Sherman’s appeal.
The basis of the appeal was that the sample had been contaminated. Sherman’s appeal stated that the cup used to collect the urine sample was leaking and that the tester grabbed another cup and transferred the sample. This information was never contained within the documentation of the original drug test and the tester only revealed the information when prompted by a supervisor. Drug test samples must follow a strict chain of custody procedure in order to be considered valid.
