Honduras vs. USA: How the USMNT Can Recover In The Hexagonal

Honduras vs. USA: How the USMNT Can Recover In The Hexagonal

The first thing in order is to congratulate Honduras for its victory against the USA. I write this even though it is painful but it has to be done.
The USMNT in its first match of the hexagonal had everything going to win the first match of the 2014 World Cup classification. The result was everything was squandered.
The Blame and Quitting Game
It is easy to blame the terrain and the locale which was San Pedro Sula in Honduras. It is also easy to use the lame excuse that world football is still young in America.
It is also easy for the coach and players to blame each other for what happened in Honduras. There are people who say that the USMNT will not qualify for 2014 and must think of 2018 and 2022.
There are still others who say that the USMNT is on its last leg after two decades of being in the public eye. These same people predict a 40 or more years of hibernation period for the USMNT.
At the present time, there are those who now think of Canada and Honduras going into next month’s matches against Costa Rica and Mexico.
Back to Basics
The USMNT must decide what it wants to do with the current hexagonal. Does the USMNT want to classify for the 2014 World Cup or become mere theatrics for the rest of the world?
The blame lies in the coach and the players. Jurgen Klinsmann may be one of the best coaches in Germany but his current performance is terrible.
At a time when the USMNT needs to classify for the 2014 World Cup, all experimentation must stop. At the least, they should be used in case of an emergency.
The idea of placing people in positions of defense and midfield that have not been tried may work or backfire. The players themselves did themselves a disservice by playing in a disorganized fashion.
There was no consistency and plenty of hesitancy on the part of the USMNT. Honduras saw this weakness and capitalized on it.
The first thing in the back to basic is that the USMNT and Jurgen Klinsmann must accept responsibility for the debacle in Honduras. The USMNT must look like a team ready to conquer the world.

The experimentation must stop and the defense [as well as midfield and forward] must be strengthened. The plays must be on a consistent basis with the open spaces closed.
For the critics who talk, talk, and talk trash about US Soccer, I challenge you to show loyalty to your team if you live in America. The challenge would be to buy and wear the USMNT or USWNT uniform.
It does not matter that soccer is in its adolescence in America. After all, the US excelled in every sport where it emptied its collective heart, mind, and soul.
It remains to be seen whether the US and USMNT can do that and classify for the World Cup.
