According to a report from Goal.com, Wayne Rooney is supposedly willing to make a move to Arsenal. The condition is that Arsenal must match his salary at Manchester United.
It appears that Rooney feels that there is no future for him in a post Ferguson Manchester United. The reasons are based on the following:
1. A potential conflict of personality with new United coach David Moyes. The two were together in Everton with Rooney leaving the club after bitter disagreements with Moyes.
2. The last season saw Rooney apparently marginalized by Manchester United. This was apparent when United faced Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League last season.
While it may be likely that Arsenal may sign Wayne Rooney, there are positives and negatives.
Rooney may be given a second opportunity in his Premier League career with Arsenal. He may not have to compete with players such as
Robin Van Persie who left the Gunners for Manchester United.
He can be a replacement for Bacary Sagna who may or may not remain with the Gunners. Rooney can be of assistance for midfielders such as Santi Cazorla and Andrei Arshavin.
This could lead to a Rooney renewed with purpose and Arsenal winning silverware for the first time in a decade. Rooney’s record in the 2012/13 Premier League season of 12 goals in 27 appearances and a 53% shooting accuracy is another positive.
Rooney may find a prominent role and tranquility in his career by signing with Arsenal. This is taking into account others who see this signing as Arsenal extracting revenge from Manchester United after the latter signed Van Persie.
The lack of silverware for Arsenal can be a drawback as well. The possibility exists for high expectations for Rooney to help the Gunners win silverware.
This could transform into pressure to perform with the intent of winning trophies. While Arsenal has a loyal fan base, it is understandable the frustrations of not winning trophies for a decade.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has received blame and Rooney would not be exempt from it. Can Rooney withstand pressure from the Gunners in the case of another trophy less season?
At the same time, Chelsea may offer an alternative to Arsenal for Rooney. Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich and recent manager Jose Mourinho may offer an attractive deal and a caveat.
In spite of the recent troubles for Chelsea, they won the UEFA Europa League championships. Chelsea might easily compete for Rooney’s signature this summer using the championship.
Rooney and his managers are likely to remain in the English Premier League. The two likely contenders for Rooney will be Arsenal and Chelsea.
It is likely that Rooney may reject Chelsea in favor of Arsenal in spite of the latter’s lack of silverware. Rooney might not have the glory in Chelsea because of Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic.
On the other hand, it is very difficult to predict what may transpire in a volatile Summer Transfer Window.
