Spain defeated Haiti last Saturday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida before a crowd of more than 36,000 spectators. This was an international friendly before Spain continued its quest in the Confederation Cup in Brazil.
What are the lessons to be learned?
Friendly Reminder about Friendly Matches
A friendly match is still a match with both teams proving themselves. It appears that Spain might have underestimated Haiti.
In the first half, Santi Cazorla and Cesc Fabregas scored goals for the Spanish side. Haiti was not within range as Iker Casillas blocked various attempts by the Haitian team to score.
The tables changed in the second half with the Haitians scoring their only goal. It appeared as though Spain was becoming fatigued while Haiti advanced.
This occurred even though Spain is in first place and Haiti 63rd in the current FIFA Coca Cola classification.
USA as a Potential World Cup Host
The USA is a potential host for any future World Cup venues after the 2022 one in Qatar. At a time when racism and hooliganism affects world football events in many countries, the US says no.
At Sun Life Stadium, the announcer said that any form of disruptive behavior would result in an ejection and arrest. While there were no reported arrests that the author knows of, the security in the stadium is tight.
In addition to private security, the police are also present to prevent any disruptions. There is also constant vigilance in the stadium.
At the same time, people were enjoying themselves with Spaniards and Haitians wearing each other’s shirts. There were a minority of people with Argentine, Mexican, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and US Soccer shirts.
Everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves in spite of the sun and the potential rain that never materialized. There were bartenders that reminded their patrons with courtesy that they reached their limit with alcohol and did not serve more.
The parking was great and the atmosphere was like a carnival. In other words, it was great and the US deserves to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and beyond.
Giving Instead of Receiving
While the purpose of a team is to win, its great to know that this match is for Haiti. The people of Haiti have suffered for many years including an earthquake.
One of the purposes of this match is to fund the construction of a world football stadium in the country. It is a great idea and it is hoped that others do not forget Haiti long after the match is in the history books.
