CONCACAF and the 2026 World Cup Bid: A Bold Reflection

CONCACAF and the 2026 World Cup Bid: A Bold Reflection

Hyped by on July 8, 2013 Website: thepremierleagueinsider.com

The President of the CONCACAF Jeffrey Webb announced that he will not support any FIFA Presidential Candidate. The announcement was appreciated in an article written by Zac Lee Rigg of Goal.

Mr. Webb stated that he will change his mind if FIFA votes to award North America with the 2026 World Cup. The reason is that Mr. Webb feels that the CONCACAF was not justly awarded the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

The selection process for the above mentioned World Cups were marred by allegations of corruption and impropriety. The selection process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup was not helped by FIFA President Sepp Blatter making statements like “Arab World deserves to host the World Cup”.

Blatter [during the selection process] favored scrapping the rotation policy for hosting FIFA World Cups while in Qatar. The FIFA President added salt to the wound for North America by saying that “the World Cup should come to Qatar”.

The result is Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup and Qatar 2022. While Russia and Qatar have a right to host a World Cup, Blatter’s behavior constitutes a conflict of interest.

Who will host the 2026 and 2030 World Cups? Argentina and Uruguay want to make a joint bid for 2030. At the same time, North America continues to remain ignored by FIFA and the other continents.

Why must the CONCACAF support a FIFA Presidential Candidate when its needs are ignored? North America deserves to host the World Cup for the following reasons.

The sense of justice must prevail in the FIFA World Cup selection since Europe, Asia, and Africa have been hosts. Russia is partly in Europe and another part in Asia.

Qatar is part of the Asian Continent and participates in the Asian Cup Qualifiers. South America hosted the World Cup in 1978 and again in 2014.

It is about time that North America hosts this event for the first time in almost two decades.

North America has the supporters, infrastructure, and security for a World Cup. It must have unity by telling FIFA that unless there is a World Cup in North America, it will NOT vote for a Presidential Candidate.

The Premier League Insider supports CONCACAF’s stand on the 2026 World Cup in North America. It is up to the people to join in this support and apply pressure on FIFA for this dream to materialize.
