As a general rule, from year to year, there is a 50% turnover rate in the NFL playoffs. 12 teams qualify for the next season after 17 weeks and usually there are about 6 new contenders each year. The 2013 season could be very different. Heading into week 10 of the regular season, there are seven teams which either have a share of their division lead or lead the division outright which did not win their division last season. The only team poised to repeat as division champion is the New England Patriots, this according to NFL Communications.
In the AFC North, the Cincinnati Bengals sit atop the division as last year’s division and Super Bowl Champions, Baltimore Ravens are floundering. The Houston Texans captured the AFC South last season but they have been a major disappointment this season and the Indianapolis Colts could run away with the title this year.
