NCAA Odds Suggest Baylor vs. Michigan State Could be the Best Game of the Bowl Season

baylorYes, the NCAA College Football Playoffs will be fantastic. Yes, Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, and Ohio State all belong in the first-ever championship, and will contest the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl in entertaining fashion.

Still. Don’t sleep on the up and coming Cotton Bowl.

No. 8 Michigan State Spartans and No. 5 Baylor Bears are both sore from the experience of coming oh-so-close to being slotted into the big dance, and will be stepping up to make this one of the best games on the NCAA’s bowl schedule.

The current odds on the game tell the tale. The NCAA betting lines on the Cotton Bowl, which will kick off earlier on New Year’s Day, before Florida State-Oregon and Ohio State-Alabama, have this positioned to be a barn burner. The total, 71.5, is tied for the highest of this year’s bowl schedule, and the spread, at just -3, means this game is expected to be close.

The Baylor Bears are likely responsible for a good portion of that total all on their own. Baylor averaged 48.8 points per game this season, the most in the country, and scored 48 points or more in four of their last five games. Ridiculous.

And while people love to talk about Michigan State’s defense, which allowed on 19.9 points against this season, their offense isn’t bad either, averaging 43.1 points per game for seventh in division I play.

The difference in this game may come down to Michigan’s vaunted defense. In their two losses this season, to two teams that made the Playoff (the Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes), the Spartans allowed 47.5 points per game.

While Michigan State’s offense supplied over 450 yards of total yards in each game, their defense couldn’t hold when it mattered most. They will not have it easy against Bryce Petty and co, making this game as good, or better, than any other Bowl on this season’s NCAA schedule.
